Introduction
Welcome to Bishop Heber College
Department of Library and Information Science
The Post Graduate & Research Department of Library and Information Science traces its origin back to 1983. The Department had been offering B.Sc. Library and Information Science, the first of its kind in the country, till 1992. Two-year integrated Master Degree programme (M.Lib.I.Sc.) was introduced in the same year and later the department became a full-fledged research department offering M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes, both full-time and part-time. The department celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the year 2009. The department admits multidisciplinary students who are first generation learners, sportspersons and differently challenged. The curriculum of the department is framed in such a way to suit the current market needs and employability skills. Since 2002, the department along with its Alumni body, Alumni Association of Library and Information Science (AALIS), has been organising National Conferences every year on recent trends in the field of Library Science and conducts INFOMEET on 2nd October to interact with the students on job opportunities and challenges of Librarianship. The role of AALIS in helping the students in their placement and internship is vital. Every year, AALIS provides Eleven Endowment Scholarships to the deserving students. Library and Information Science Association (LISA) is functioning under the guidance of two faculty members. The current students would take up different managerial roles and conduct various programmes for the benefit of the students. This activity hones their soft skills and helps in finding a suitable job for them. The uniqueness of the Department is that all the faculty members are the Alumni of the Department. The dedicated team of faculty members contribute enthusiastically to mould the students, so as to make them efficient library professionals and responsible citizens.
